Canvas Director's Chair

Canvas Directors Chairs

Having spent the last month and a half learning about other bloggers, I find I’m not alone.  I’m not the only one with LOTS of things picked up at yard sales and thrift stores, just sitting and waiting for either the time or inspiration to get completed.  I’m happy to say I can check off one more project.  Well…almost.  I got one project 1/2…no 3/4 completed.

I found these director’s chairs at a yard sale…oh let’s see….well, more than 3 years ago (ok so maybe it’s closer to five, but who’s counting?)

Director's Chairs

If memory serves me correctly they were $5 for both.  Could have been $5 each.  Either way I thought they were a good deal.  Only thing wrong with them was needing replacement backs and seats.  They’ve spent way too long in storage waiting for the day when they could be repaired and enjoy the light of day again.  Today’s the day my friends =)

One is missing both the back and seat canvas and the other needed the seat replaced where it split completely.  At least I had something to work with for a template.  I looked at Jo-Ann’s for canvas fabric but just didn’t see anything I thought would be sturdy enough.  Enter the canvas drop cloth.  I’ve seen tons of projects using these as everything from curtains, to lamp shade covers, to covering diaper boxes for storage and slipcovers.

Since the drop cloths are neutral colored and affordable (read: WAY cheaper than the fabric store) I thought I’d take a chance and give them a try.  I picked one up at Lowes, (6′ x 9′)  for $12.38.   I washed it in warm water and dried on medium.  It came  out way softer than I expected.  Too late to turn back now…onward we go.

Canvas Template

I laid out the drop cloth with the old pieces on top as a template and cut around leaving about a 1/2″ seam allowance all the way around.   {ok I’ll be honest here…I spent way too much time over-thinking and drawing out a sketch on paper.}  From there to the sewing machine…

Brother SE-400

Darling Hubby got me this for Christmas.  This bad boy is da-BOMB!  It even scared me for the first 6 months.  We are getting a little more acquainted every time I use it. [I might even learn to love it, but don't tell the hubby ;) ]  …….I just straight stitched it using the original as a guide.  And here is a completed chair….

Completed Chair

I have the other pieces done for the second chair, I just need to make a trip to Lowes to find the wood pieces that go through the….sleeves?  Whatever ya want to call them, they hold the fabric between the arms and the base of the chair.  I’m still debating whether I want to paint the chairs or stencil/stamp the fabric.

We shall see….

Update:  Found a wood strip at Restore for $.25.  Yep, 25 cents.  Long enough to make 2 strips for the second chair.  Project complete.  Well…until I decide to do something about color.  For now I like them light colored.

Please take a minute to scroll down and leave a comment.  I would love to know what you think.  Did this inspire you?  Will you use this as a jumping off point for your own project? Or just to say Hi I was here.  Comments are the only way to let me know what you are thinking.  If you enjoyed, please share with your friends or followers.  Thanks =)

The chair looks awesome! You have a creative mind and a nice taste when it comes to style. I also love buying sale items and usually looking for the most simple one and with cheaper price, and then experiment on my own thing to make my newly found item look brand new and unique. I think I can also be one of you and your colleagues :) I really had a nice time reading your article. I’ll definitely be back again to read for more :)

You are definately not alone, should see my place with the half done projects patiently waiting to be completed! Thank goodness I married a placid man!! The chair turned out great!! I like the light color, makes the awesome shape of the chair really stand out. If you did too much more it might look too busy, although a set of gt stripes would look cool!! (my latest obsession – car stripes on furniture!)
