Upper Falls - Old Man's Cave

Hocking Hills, Ohio’s Natural Wonders

Facebook Twitter

I’m sure you all thought I fell off the face of the earth over the last week.  Well, I kinda, sorta did.  Darling hubby and I, along with our trusty pooch Apollo, took a little get-away to the beautiful Hocking Hills.  Located about an hour SE of Columbus, Hocking Hills is a hiker and nature lover’s paradise.  Deep gorges, craggy rock cliffs, meandering paths and waterfalls are just some of the sights.  Rather than bore you with details,  I’ll just show some pics and give you the links to follow for more info about the area.

Roots and Rock

Isn’t it amazing how the tree roots find a way to survive in such a rocky place?

More rocks and roots

Stone Bridge

Devil's Bathtub

This is called Devil’s Bathtub.  Just think how much water and time it took to wear out this depression.

Worn Stone Steps

How many feet have tromped up and down these stone steps?

Caves and niches worn by water

Layers of sandstone

I had to take a close-up of the ferny moss growing on the sandstone.

Growing on the rocks

Looks like alligator or lizard skin, doesn’t it?

Another Bridge

I love this shot, but not as much as this one….

Handsome Hubby and Apollo (or Po-Po as we affectionately call him).

Rock Cliffs

This is our third get-away to Hocking Hills and surely not our last.  For more info….

There are MANY places to stay…We’ve used Old Man’s Cave Chalets the last two times and have not regretted it.  Fireplaces and hot tubs at almost every cabin and several are pet-friendly.  We’ve stayed in Deer Run (last time) and this time at Turkey Run.  All you have to bring is your food, clothing and beach towels for the hot tub.  I always pack my crock-pot, too =)

Of course, you can use Google to find more information.

I do have to say that we went a week earlier this year with the hopes of seeing some really great fall color.  However, three or four days of windy conditions before we arrived and a couple days of rain while we were there pretty much removed a lot of the leaves.  Maybe next year….

Oh, I almost forgot to mention…Last vacation with NO internet access.  I am still trying to get caught up on my emails….only 697 to go….geesh

My goodness, this place looks like paradise. Its so cool to think about how many people have walked those stairs. What must it take to wear down stone like that? The devils bathtub is incredible. Amazing what nature can do.

I could almost smell the damp, cool smell that surely must have been present! I loved your pictures! Thank you so much for sharing them at my “Meet Me Monday” linky party! I think this is near where my sister lives in Logan, Ohio. If it is the same place….I believe we all went there for a day hike on year. Thank you for sharing!
