Ever have one of those days where you feel like you hit the jackpot? I don’t mean the lottery {I wish!!}. I mean you are looking for something new to get the creative juices flowing. And you find it…in spades.
A couple days ago I made a trip to Dollar Tree. Love, love, love that place! {Even worked at one many, many years ago before I moved to Columbus, Ohio} Originally, I went in for some fall items…leaf garlands, pumpkins, a wreath form. I always make sure I check out the craft supply aisle while I’m there. What did I find? How about superfine glitter in a rainbow of colors. Beautiful little packets in a variety of shades. I picked up two packages with colors gold to copper to almost a deep bronze. I also got a package that ran from green to turquoise to cobalt blue.
The larger green glitter I had on hand (from WalMart, I think).
I couldn’t help but think of all the projects I’ve seen lately with ombre. Ok, I’m sure everybody knows but just in case you don’t…ombre is shaded or graduated in tone, as in light to dark.
Hmmmm…..pumpkins + variegated glitter + mod podge = ombre glittered pumpkins! ~~~ Oh yeah, next project, for..sure.
So here we go…
Mod Podge (Available at WalMart $6) I had mine already on hand.
You could also use regular white glue (as long as it dries clear).
Glitter $1 per pack x2 gold & 1 blue/green — I used almost all of the gold shown (only 2 of the 4 packets of lightest gold color) and just a tiny bit of green.
Please note the glitter says resealable…uh, I call BS. I bought a small weekly pill organizer today at the thrift store for a quarter to put the leftovers in.
Pumpkins — I used 2 Dollar Tree Pumpkins at $1 each.
I also used 6 paper plates …1 for each color and one to work over top of, so as not to waste any glitter.
The first pumpkin I started in the middle. I knew I had 5 colors (remember 2 each of lightest gold) and the top would have more of the light gold. I just kinda eye-balled it and went a little wider than my 1″ paint brush.
Brush with Mod Podge, sprinkle with glitter, shake extra onto paper plate, turn about 90 degrees and repeat. Brush, sprinkle, shake, turn, repeat. If you’re not happy with the coverage you can go back over it when it is dry with more glue and glitter until you are satisfied. Trust me, holding onto the stem will give you a major cramp in your hand. So just let it dry and come back. I did try sticking a skewer in the bottom to hold onto but I think it’s hollow and it wiggled around, so I just held it by the stem. I still have several areas where you can see the pumpkin orange but I’m ok with it.
Originally, I covered the stem with the lightest gold but then decided I wanted to add some of the green. I did a combo of regular and superfine.
Then had too much glue and it took FOR. EV. ER to dry.
I did find this a little difficult so on the second pumpkin I decided to use the natural ribs as guide lines for the stripes. I think this was much easier. And maybe even prettier.
I did decide to coat with a clear gloss sealer. Just to keep the fall out of glitter to a minimum.
I actually had 3 cans of sealer in my stash. This one made by Plaid (which I figured would work well with the Plaid Mod Podge), one made by Kilz (where the heck did that come from?) and one from Valspar (I think this one came from the Habitat Restore for $1).
Here they are in bright sunshine about to get their coat of sealer. They sparkle like diamonds…dontcha think?
Here’s my little contraption I made a while back to paint some drawer pulls. Just a piece of cardboard with some dry wall screws poked up from underneath. I sat the pumpkins on these so I could get the bottom edge.
While this project was a little time consuming, I totally think they are worth it. They will probably be displayed all the way to Thanksgiving.
Update: I forgot to mention the candlesticks, they came from Goodwill for $1.99 for the pair!!
And now to today’s question….What have you covered with glitter?
Please take a minute to scroll down and leave a comment. I would love to know what you think. Did this inspire you? Will you use this as a jumping off point for your own project? Or just say – Hi, I was here. Comments are the only way to let me know what you are thinking. If you enjoyed, please share with your friends or followers. Thanks =)
